Jum'at 19 Agustus 2011

15:14  European shares fell early on Friday, extending the previous session's steep decline, on worries that major economies could be headed into recession, and that policymakers have no solutions for the euro zone debt crisis.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index [ .FTEU3 896.60  -28.59 (-3.09%) ] index of top European shares was down 1.3 percent at 913.47 points, after falling 4.8 percent on Thursday, its biggest one-day decline since March 2009, after a raft of gloomy U.S. economic data on concerns over short-term funding stress on European banks.

"The market is discounting a recession, but I would say they're wrong," said Lothar Mentel, chief investment officer at Octopus Investments, which manages $4 billion.

"Some stocks have been driven down to ridiculous levels. There has been a panic about Euro

14:39  Worries about the European banking system shook stock markets across the continent, and then across the Atlantic Thursday. The selling was compounded by weak U.S. economic reports and signs that the U.S. tech industry is feeling the pinch of a slowing world economy. "The tech stocks have heavy exposure to Europe. That's a big chunk of their earnings," said Art Cashin, head of floor operations at UBS. A number of tech companies this week lowered forward guidance, including Hewlett-Packard HP which cut its full year revenue forecast to $127.2 billion to $127.6 billion, form $129 billion to $130 billion, when it reported earnings Thursday afternoon. HP also said Thursday that it may spin off its personal computer division, and that it was ending its tablets and smart phone business. The company also said it is in talks to buy U.K. software company Autonomy for $10 billion. Cashin said the industry is in a transitional phase as the challenge from the iPad and other mobile devices shakes the PC industry. Earlier this week, Google GOOG said it was buying Motorola Mobility MMI for $12.5 billion. "The world of tech a year from now will be very different," he said.

Personal view on JCI today 08/19/11 (Akhmad Nurcahyadi)

Akhmad Nurcahyadi
